have lasted for yearsAug 27, 2009

I bought these for my 11yo son when he was 3 or 4. They are still going strong. I have 5 children and all have enjoyed these. I'm amazed that the sponge tips have remained intact all these years.

Somewhat disappointingFeb 21, 2010

I purchased these paints for my 2.5 year old because they seemed perfect for a toddler. The paint bottles really are just right for little hands--they are "chubby" and fit my toddler's "fist grasp" just right. The paint is somewhat watery, but the colors are vibrant and the paint dries quickly. The disappointment comes from the fact that while these paints make great dot art, when you try to paint with them by dragging the sponge tip across the paper, the paint flow to the sponge tip stops, which causes the product to streak (when experiencing this for the first time, my dismayed toddler exclaimed, "It's broken!"). You have to stop and push down hard on the sponge tip to get the paint flowing again before you can continue. Additionally, I wouldn't say these paints are all that washable. The blue paint didn't come off of my daughter's hands (or my hands!) until several handwashings later. Despite these shortcomings, I think this is a great way for younger children to enjoy painting. If these paints did more than dots and were more washable, they would have received five stars.

Get the Do-A-Dot version of these insteadJul 26, 2011
By K. Wilson We got these Alex paints and the Do-A-Dot Rainbow Art Set (Set of 6) at the same time, and the Do-A-Dots definitely win. We actually ended up tossing these after a couple of months rather than finishing them. The tubes were too thick and too stiff for my 2-year-old son to be able to squeeze easily. And they leaked - not a lot, but enough to get paint spread all around the room, which is a pain to track down and clean up even with washable paint. I do love the concept, and my son and I really enjoy playing with the Do-A-Dot version.

Fun, but NOT WASHABLEMar 25, 2011
By Erin Rippy I bought these for my girls, who are ages 2 and 4. Both girls love them. They're easy for the little one to hold and use, a good size for toddler hands. She mostly dots and scribbles, while her big sister is easily able to draw with them. We've been using them for several months and the foam tips have held up so far, and still plenty of paint left in the bottles.
So why only 3 stars? These are NOT washable as they claim to be. Kids are inevitably going to paint on surfaces other than paper. Skin. Clothes. Table. Walls. The dog. As a parent, you either resign yourself to watching your kids like a hawk, or you accept the liklihood of having to clean up messes from places you would never imagine messes could happen.
I prefer to let my kids have a little fun (within reason) and deal with the mess when the fun is done. Buying washable art supplies usually helps keep the messes to a minimum, but these Alex dot paints are far from what I consider to be washable. Brillo pads and bleach might work, but your average antibacterial hand soap and laundry detergent wont do the trick. Half a dozen hand washings still left my children with stained hands, which took several days of baths to finally wear off, and the paints didn't completely wash out of their clothes. I have designated 'paint' tshirts for my girls, but if your child comes in contact with these paints at school or daycare where they aren't wearing protective clothing, beware!
A fun product? Yes. Washable? No.

Love the dots and dashesJan 21, 2010

This paint is perfect for my 2 and 3 year old children. They love to paint, but since I don't love the mess, don't get to as much as they'd like. These paints solve the problem as they eliminate the dripping messiness of traditional paints. My kids love them and I do too. The paint comes out easily and the colors mix just the same as regular paint. They even work well on an easel ( I was worried the colors might not dispense well at that angle). All in all I'm extremely satisfied, and even more so given the price.
