Description:

Written by three experienced occupational therapists, this book offers a combination of theory and strategies. It is a perfect tool for those working with young children, but also broad enough to be adapted for older children and adults. Building Bridges provides creative techniques and useful tips while offering innovative strategies and practical advice for dealing with everyday challenges, including managing behaviors, improving muscle tone, developing social skills, selecting diets, and more. Part one explains the role of the occupational therapists in treatment and examines sensory integration theories. Part two offers methods of identifying sensory problems in children along with numerous strategies and activities.

4Parent and Therapist Friendly BookMay 16, 2010
This book has several great lists of activities for kids with sensory integration deficits. Its a book you don't have to read cover to cover. Search the Table of Contents to which area your child is having difficulty and just read that portion of the book. I wish they wouldn't have added "Autism and PDD" to their title... it scares some parents away. Because not only are these activities/ideas great for children with Autism, but most kids with sensory integration deficits.

5The Bridge!Feb 06, 2010
This book has the answers teachers have been waiting for regarding sensory issues (behavior problems) and ways to deal with them. Though classroom teachers should remember to always consult with an occupational therapist before using any of the information contained in the book.

1If only there was science to support sensory integrationDec 13, 2009
I assume if you are considering buying this book you have a child that has special needs and you are whole-heartedly looking for the best therapies to try. Be careful, there are many therapies, including Sensory Integration Therapy, that look good from the outside, but have absolutely zero research that is scientifically sound (meaning you can measure it and it can be replicated) to back them up.

I am a special needs teacher who has three family members diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I want therapies that proven to work because all of the kids I work with deserve interventions that work. I have seen parents choose ineffective or harmful interventions with the best of intentions. After looking at the data and scientific studies I found that that there are good, scientifically sound, therapies to be found.

When I google "sensory integration Therapy" I come back with lots of feel good stories and personal accounts. What is lacking is any scientific research, the reason it isn't there is because this therapy is useless. I truly believe that people use this therapy on their children with the best of intentions, often guided by an occupational therapist (who often know there is no science to support SIT; however, they think that the science will be proven later on). I personally love going for a massage or just getting deep pressure, it calms me; however, it does not improve the ability of the brain to process sensory information resulting in the better functioning in daily activities . What makes an occupational therapist qualified as behavioral specialist? Don't misunderstand, I have great respect for many occupational therapists and think that they do lots of good, but not when it comes to sensory integration therapy.

Lots of kids in public schools receive sensory integration therapy and it seems to work; however, what people fail to note is that other interventions, those behaviorally based, were going on simultaneously. Please take the time to study thoroughly the science behind a therapy before you try it. I hate to see monetary resources and time wasted on ineffective treatments when there are effective ones available. [...]

5Easy to understand and practicalSep 15, 2007
I'm an occupational therapist and have taken entire courses in sensory integration that were not as clear and helpful with ideas as this book.

5Great suggestions, Not just for autismJun 12, 2007
As an occupational therapist, I love this book for the suggestions it provides to the very practical everyday difficulties parents face when their child has sensory integration issues. To me, the only downfall is that it refers to children with autism so much. I have used it with any child with sensory integration difficulties, but have had to create my own handouts based on the book to avoid offending parents whose children are clearly not autistic. It addresses things like brushing teeth, getting to and staying asleep, and problem behaviors like biting, hitting, and so much more.

Sensory Interventions was designed primarily to help parents and therapists find appropriate child therapy toys for helping children with Sensory Processing Disorders to develop Sensory Integration and acheive their maximum potential.
