Quickly forgottenMay 20, 2005
By Caro My 14 month-old was not very interested with wooden puzzles, so I thought adding noise to them would change that. Unfortunately, it took him about 25 minutes to figure out that all he had to do to was to step on the right piece of the puzzle to make the sound come out. He has since then stopped trying to place each piece in the puzzle and is not even amused by stepping on it any more. Overall, this toy lasted 3 days. The sounds are also very electronic (fake) and they will sound when you switch the lights on, when you step beside the cupboard where they have been stored, or for no apparent reason!

We thought we had miceMay 13, 2008
By Lorinda It is good quality, but the sounds are light sensitive and my son keeps misplacing the pieces. Early on, when I would turn off the lights, I would hear the gerbil and I thought we had an infestation. Now, I am used to hearing all the animals complain every night when I turn out the lights.

Lots of fun and very durableSep 22, 2010
By jessica0418 We bought this secondhand, so it's already been used by some other child and still works perfectly. That alone is a testament to the quality of this puzzle.
My daughter is 18 months and has been playing with this daily for about 4 months now. The pegs make it easy for her little fingers to handle. The cut-out outlines of the animals are just complex enough to give her a challenge, but not too detailed to make positioning the pieces too hard for her. The puzzle is helping her learn her animals and what sounds they make.
I think the sound quality is just fine, especially for a small, inexpensive kid's toy like this. Furthermore, the mouse and guinea pig sounds drive my cat crazy (he is always trying to dig under the puzzle to locate the source) so they must be right on if they can fool him. :)
The only time the sounds activate for us (aside from when the puzzle is in use) is when a piece is out of place when we turn lights off. Some reviewers have mentioned the puzzle going off every time they turn the lights off - this never happens to us. Either they have missing pieces or their pieces must be cut differently than mine.
I recommend this to every parent looking for a good quality, educational toy for their young toddler. We adore it and are hoping to add to our collection with some other M&D sound puzzles.

Bought for Autistic NephewSep 17, 2011
By JKLineberry I bought these for my Autistic nephew when he was 2 on the recommendation of an Occupational Therapist. Having no children of my own, I am not familiar with the different brands for children's toys. After asking around I was told that Melissa and Doug were well known for their safety and quality so I decided to go ahead even though $10 for a puzzle seemed high to me.
My nephew loves these. In addition to hearing the sounds and learning to mimic them, he is also learning tactile skills which is what his therapist has been focusing on. I like the quality of the puzzles. They are very well made and remind me of toys I had when I was a kid, when you could actually keep toys to pass on, not the disposable toys there are now.
As a special bonus, the sounds are perfect to get on my brothers nerves, hehehe. We are 13 years apart and I love teasing him about getting back at him now for his toddler days!

Great puzzle. No problems.Mar 06, 2012
By MJ My 19-month old loves this puzzle. We've had it for 6-months or so and everything still works as well as on the first day. I have never had any of the sounds go off at night like other reviewers have mentioned, but then I always put the pieces back in the puzzle before I put it up. The sounds are all recognizable (I've heard much worse in other toys) and yes if you move a wrong piece over the place where another piece goes it will make the sound but, since there is a picture underneath each piece (inside the opening)your child should still be able to associate the sound with the right animal.
