Description:

Does your child scream at the mere mention of a haircut? Does he need all the tags cut out of his shirt, or only wear very specific textures? Is she a picky eater? Does he have poor handwriting and seem to be more clumsy than the average child? Maybe your child has difficulty in sensory integration. Sensory integration is the ability to use the senses to make sense of the world around us. Sensory integration problems can create these and other problems. This book is packed with practical ideas and tips to help a child who faces challenges with sensory integration dysfunction. It also helps to explain and define sensory integration. It is a book of ideas, strategies, and hints to help your child be successful despite the challenges of DSI. The book presents a brief overview of sensory integration dysfunction and its varied presentations. It then proceeds to offer strategies that may be helpful to accomplish everyday tasks. Subjects: 1. Sensory Integration Strategies. 2. Sensory Integration Dysfunctions. 3. Child rearing and home care.

3Not as helpful as expectedMar 12, 2006
By Jenny S. Smith
The focus of this book is definately school aged children. Most of the suggestions, while helpful, are primarily focused towards school and school related tasks. The book would be great for teachers and parents of elementary or secondary school children with SDI, but for those parents of toddlers or preschoolers with SDI may want to look towards another source.

5Hats off to Jeanne GanzNov 05, 2006

As a mom to a preschool child with Sensory Modulation and as an adult with Sensory Integration Dysfunction myself I can tell you this book is PACKED with easy terms, stories and sensible strategies to help. The focus of this book is clearly on children of all ages (I noticed their was a reviewer that didn't feel the book could help her younger child, I completely disagree, but every family has to work with this disorder within their means). I am putting her tactics in place with both my 3 year old child and with my 20 month old (not diagnosed yet).

This book reminds me of a recipe book, it is not very long and overwhelming, it gets to the heart of matters. Here is the thing though, I don't always follow a recipe to the ingredient, and I find I have to mix in some of my own seasonings. For parents that are searching for answers I am finding out it isn't just one method that will work, I might have to tweak my tone or do slightly alter a strategy but this book is PRACTICAL. . I have read 5 other books on this subject to date.

So how practical is practical? Her strategies are as easy as avoiding touching of the head and face for children that have tactile system issues.....oh, had I known only a couple of months ago what I have read in the book. She gives strategies for trimming and clipping of nails, combing hair, bathing, haircuts, and so much more. I unfortunately learned some of the things prior to reading the book (trail and error) but I definitely picked up many new strategies.

Thank you to Jeanne Ganz!

5A Must Have for any parent with a child diagnosed with SIJan 27, 2006
By Alison Herman
I love this book... the layout was great.

Jeanne Ganz lays out different settings that pose

problems for a child with SI and gave great suggestions

for each setting.

I have read every book out there on SI, and there are still things to learn ... from how to brush a child's hair, to what kind of things can make a child school day easier. Buy this book - it will make your life as a parent easier and arm you with solutions that keep your child happier.

5About TimeJan 12, 2006

My daughter is lucky enough to have Jeanne Ganz as her OT. Although many OT's will tell you that they know all about sensory integration, few are certified in it. Jeanne Ganz's book brings her years of experience in sensory integration to parents and school district personnel. I wish we had known about sensory intergration years ago as it would have saved so much hardship.
