5Durable and tons of funSep 24, 2009
By booklovingmom
I've bought this twice: once for my 9-year-old son, and once for a 6-year-old friend who played with this at our house so much I had to buy it for her. Kids love hiding behind the furniture or around the corner and using the periscope to see around. I love that it's sturdy (ours has been in our house for four years and gotten plenty of play) and, comparatively reasonably priced. I've looked around a lot for decent prices on a toy periscope over the years, and this one always comes out on top. Lots of fun without lots of cash outlay.

2The view is too small; you can not see much of anything.Oct 07, 2009

We intend to use this periscope inside a toy cardboard house we built for the kids. The plan is to bore a hole in the middle to place the periscope so they can see outside from inside the box. Sounds fun? Not exactly. The view is too small. When you look into it, you can only see an area the size of a single face in it. They should make this wide angle view. It is too hard to find and see anything, like looking for a tiny airplane up in the sky using a peephole. Not really worth it.

Construction is fine. It is a piece of telescoping plastic pipe than extends to 14". But at least it would help if it is more functional than this.

I bought the Alex SPY SCOPE primarily to use as a periscope TOOL or mechanic's mirror, not as a toy. The telescoping tube rotates 360 degrees and is useful for inspecting voids and cable runs in my boat hull, under the dashboard of my SUV, and inside the walls of a building. Believe it not, it is a better tool than any one I could find at hardware stores, and it is much less expensive. It would be a better tool if the tube were less translucent. Attaching a LED light with a rubber band makes it very useful for dark areas where I use it most of the time.

My six-year-old twin granddaughters like to play with it to `peek around the corner'. I believe it helps with hand-eye coordination and understanding physical spatial relationships.

3Not the easiest to useApr 17, 2010

Difficult to locate what you want to see. Maybe it's just the periscope thing, but this toy proved to be too much of a bother to be fun for my son. It's sitting in a toy box.
