"Nana" I got this for our granddaughter to use for a bug collection she will take to school. Being in 1st grade, little fingers need something to grip...the snake is so fun! It is light weight and easy to handle. The magnifying quality is perfect for her needs and is big enough she won't have to keep moving it to view all the insect at once. I'm so glad I found it! Beth Blog "Mommy" My 4-year-old daughter has been asking for a magnifying glass, since there is an episode of Sid the Science Kid that is all about using magnifying glasses. We just got her this one, and it's great! My 2-year-old son has dropped it on the tile once or twice, and it's fine. I think it's a plastic lens. It's bigger and sturdier than I would have expected based on the photo. The lens is about 4 inches across, and the whole thing is about 10 inches long. Both my children (4 and 2) have little nature collections (mosses, sea urchin, shells, pine cones etc.), and while this toy help them focus on an item, it doesn't do much to actually magnify it.
