Description:

The landmark book Boys and Girls Learn Differently! outlines the brain-based educational theories and techniques that can be used to transform classrooms and help children learn better. Now The Boys and Girls Learn Differently Action Guide for Teachers presents experiential learning techniques that teachers can use to create an environment and enriched curriculum that take into account the needs of the developing child's brain and allows both boys and girls to gain maximum learning opportunities. This important and easy-to-use guide is based on the latest scientific scholarship on the differences between boy's and girl's brains, neurological development, hormonal effects, behavior, and learning needs and offers information on what all children need to be able to learn effectively. Michael Gurian and his colleagues applied these recent discoveries in the field during a two-year Gurian Institute pilot program in Missouri that led to measurably better academic performance and improved behavior.

3not as good as expectedJan 27, 2007

I love brain research and how children learn best. This book had some good information, but was disappointing in the practical application. The ideas were nothing new and nothing those teaching for a few years wouldn't already know.

1No new information for classroom teachersAug 15, 2009
By Patricia F. Dunn
Initially Dr. Leonard Sax's Gender Matters opened dialogue among my colleagues in education, so I wanted to address gender in the classroom when choosing a book study course for professional development. Like the others in the course, I have researched and observed the differences in the ways males and females appear to think, to give voice, and to navigate throughout the classroom setting. While I had supposed that this text would provide valuable information for our small group of high school teachers, I found that the book tended to echo what we'd previously discovered: that teachers need to be aware of and address the differences in the ways boys and girls learn. What the book failed to do is tell us what to do with the information, and I felt that we were left to come up with strategies on our own.

1Should be called "Why some boys and girls learn differently"Aug 22, 2009
By Rachel Lo "rachello"
Michael Gurian has created fame based on the segregation of the sexes in the classroom. While there is little doubt that some boys and some girls have vastly different learning styles and science has proven girls and boys are different on the inside, it is disheartening to see educators aiming to teach to gender and not the individual.

By stereotyping individuals by gender we make it even more difficult for those who don't fit the norm, like "masculine" girls and "effeminate" boys. First, they aren't recognized as individuals first, and second, they feel even more like "square pegs" because the gender-based teaching approach emphasizes how much they don't fit in.

I heard Michael Gurian interviewed on NPR. He was arrogant and rude to the other guests. He is so determined to be right that he is ignoring the purpose of becoming an educator: to make education more accesssible to all.
